About the project

The Holly Jolly Card Bot was Art & Science’s digital holiday card for 2023, providing a personalized, AI-driven experience. Users would input details about the recipient, such as their name, pronouns, type of relationship, and the desired tone of the message. We then used OpenAI’s API to generate a custom holiday poem about the person, which was then paired with a DALL-E 3-generated image that matched the poem's contents. Users could then send the card via email, download the card, share it on social, or create another one for someone else.

The Holly Jolly Card Bot was built with Laravel for backend functionality, including form handling and API integration, and Vue for the front-end experience.

Challenges & Considerations

A major challenge was ensuring that the AI-generated images did not default to traditional gender roles or stereotypical depictions of relationships. I worked to develop prompts and filtering techniques that would guide the AI toward producing neutral and inclusive representations. Using animals instead of humans helped greatly with avoiding some of these issues, and they also just ended up being cuter. Additionally, attention was paid to the tone and cultural appropriateness of the imagery to align with the general wintery messages. The ultimate goal was to create and inclusive experience for everyone to enjoy, and still allow them to send the cards to their loved ones, no matter the relationship of the sender and recipient.
