About the project

ArtworxTO was a website created to showcase the City of Toronto's "Year of Public Art" in 2021 and 2022, a celebration of the city’s diverse and vibrant public art scene. Over the years, Toronto has fostered numerous art initiatives like street art programs and large-scale projects such as Nuit Blanche, but these were often siloed into separate datasets. The challenge was to bring these datasets together, offering users a seamless experience where they could explore and navigate the city's public art offerings. The website not only allowed users to view art for free but also helped them plan their visits, turning public art exploration into a curated experience. Users could explore specific art hubs that featured curated exhibitions, as well as discover temporary cultural events happening across the city.

Features

Custom Map Integration: The site offered a highly interactive map where users could browse and locate public artworks around Toronto. This map helped users filter artworks based on categories or specific interests, providing easy access to free art installations.

Personalized Art Routes: Users could create a list of favorite artworks and then plot a route between them using the Google Directions API. This feature made it easy for people to plan art-filled days with friends or explore specific pieces of interest, offering a more tailored experience.

Art Hubs with Curated Exhibitions: There were five major art hubs located throughout the city, each with its own set of curated exhibitions. These hubs provided a more immersive experience, with specific events and artist interactions associated with the displayed artworks.

Event Listings: Beyond permanent public art, the website also highlighted temporary cultural events like dance performances and musical shows. This section allowed users to stay updated on the more fleeting artistic experiences happening around the city.
